Sten is one of the better characters.
Well that's a depressing thought.

What are you talking about? Sten is AWESOME.
He has wit. He has personality. You just need to get his approval high enough. And he does have a lot to say once you do his quest.
It's hard to gain Sten's approval, since every time you do any bonus quests he says "There are no darkspawn to kill here." And then "Sten Disapproves: -10" The point of his character is that he's depressed and has no personality. The problem is that BioWare went overboard and crossed the threshold of Sten being a complete douchebag.
The fact is, it isn't the truth, it isn't Biowares fault that you are just too thick to understand Sten's motivation/personality. I could enlighten you but I think it would take me at least a decade to get you to understand considering the rubbish you've posted in this topic.

Sten is borderline abusive. I'm not sure why Morrigan gets such grief about being a **** while Sten is such a colossal douchbag.
I agree completely. Most people seem to feel that sten is just a tortured soul. Then don't let him be a character. No one wants to see that. No one is that meaningless in real life. The best line Sten has is "Very well, I will go."

See, the problem you seem to have with Sten is that you take his terse answers to mean that he is an ****, whereas actually he's just a stoic soldier. You can't treat him the way you would typically treat a squadmate in an RPG (i.e. trying to be their friend, find out everything about them, complement them, etc), because he has no time for it.RenownedRyan wrote...

You can easily gain approval with him simply by acting like his commanding officer. Even if you make choices he definately disagrees with, he won't disapprove if you simply stick to your guns.

Agreed. Sten, unlike the rest of the squad, doesn't need you to coddle or understand him. What he needs is for you to prove yourself as a worthy leader. Do that, and he actually becomes one of the easiest characters to gain affection from. Respond to him with clear confident answers, do not make any excuses for your actions ("I'm new to the Wardens"), avoid answering a question he poses with yet another question, and above all do not belittle him even in jest ("Well, I can see you're right on top of that").Gill Kaiser wrote...

Once you understand him, he's actually quite easy to deal with. He's always the first character I'm able to raise to 100% approval in my playthroughs.

He bores me to tears, and when I bother to even speak to him in Lothering (I have a tendency to just run right through it) and rescue him, I let him rot in camp. I believe him to be a very 3-d character and well fleshed out, but my PC thinks he's too tied into tradition and I can't just be fussed. He just... does nothing for me. But I dislike most of my potential companions anyways, so I suppose that's to be expected.

Yup, that's what makes Sten so awesome. Unlike almost everyone else in the game, including Morrigan in her own coy way, who is fawning for the Warden's approval, Sten doesn't need you for validation. Sten an extremely effecient, accomplished, and focused person, and frankly I really enjoyed getting to know him over time. He brings an extremely different point of view to any situation. The only time he ever really disapointed me was in Redcliffe.munrohk wrote...

Maybe you need to be female, but that voice is so sexy. "Kadan"... sweet Maker...RenownedRyan wrote...
Not everyone could put you to sleep with their voice, but Sten accomplises that nicely.
I believe one of his battle cries has "kadan" in it? Is he really saying "for the captain"?

He's also one of the easiest companions to raise approval for, one conversation and he's like 3/4s of the way up there.

He's a man outside of his own world. He's alone in an alien culture - a place where, regardless of how intelligent and cultured the Qunari are, Sten cannot get used to or understand. Of course he's going to be reserved.
He's short and terse. Short and terse does not equal prickish behavior.
