I can't stand how Sten complains every time I accept a side quest. I try to keep 'ole frankenstein around, but he gets on my nerves so much!

I know eh, I enjoy Sten's power but if I can't take him on a mission with me, what good is he, its like a waste of space.
I would really like to build him up and fight the archdemon with him, but HE is really preventing me. If I'm to have a character pestering me on every mission I might as well not even use him.

Plus having him open your cage in fort Drakon is probably one of the funniest scenes in the game.

"The irony of this is not lost on me." Or something like that.

I admit that I don't like Sten or Morrigan or Leliana. But it is worth it talking to them because you learn something about different kinds of people that would be lost had you just put them aside. Characters can be well written and enjoyed as characters, even if that "enjoyment" is limited to despising them. The world would be boring if everyone kissed your *** all the time.

Sten is just pure awesome.MY only problem with him is that he uses a two hander, just like Oghren, so at one point I'm Stenless.

One key to Sten is that whatever language you speak in game is not his native tongue. He has trouble with it. Which makes him reluctant to speak.

Another is that he is mission oriented. He likes clear instructions. He hates ambivalence and distractions. You're here to slay darkspawn. That's what you should be doing. When you do something else, especially if you have not demonstrated your competence, he gets impatient.

Finally, he's from a different culture. The Qunari are different. Not only a different culture, but a different race. It's apparently a fairly structured environment with a great deal of confidence about itself. Sten really does believe that the way of the Qun is the best way. By not following you have chosen poorly.

If you keep your early conversations with him as direct, short and mission oriented as possible, you can gain approval very quickly.

Sten's epilogue in the US ending is especially touching too.

Ahh, well it was too much hope he was inspired only by my PC. ;)

Well, in his own way, he is.  You're the only non-qunari he considers truly honorable, perhaps the highest aspiration of the Qun.  By calling you "kadan", he is saying he considers you a brother and worthy to lead him, which is quite an honor considering you are a puny little human/elf/dwarf.

basically, Sten's stoic nature cracks me up

also, his love of cookies, and the cookie dialogue for to get into the tower are AMAZING

"Where did you get those cookies Sten?"

"There was a child in the last village, a fat and slovenly one... he did not need these confections, so I took them from him"
